Before You Hang It

The practical questions that come up between falling for an idea and drilling the first hole. Short answers, with links to the longer essays.

How high should a digital frame hang?

Aim for the centre of the screen at roughly 145 to 152 cm from the floor. Above a sofa or sideboard, leave 20 to 25 cm of clear wall between the furniture and the bottom edge. More in Compose a Changing Wall.

Matte or glossy screen for art?

For most daylit rooms, matte. It diffuses reflections from windows and lamps so the image reads more like paper. Glossy panels suit dim rooms used mainly for film. See Find the Right Display.

How do I hide the cable?

Use a slim raceway painted the wall colour, or an in-wall kit with recessed boxes. Any extension of mains wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.

Can a static image damage the screen?

OLED panels can retain images if one picture is shown at high brightness for long periods. LCD-based art displays are far less susceptible. Rotation and sleep schedules reduce the risk.

Do I need a cloud account?

Not always. Several frames accept images by USB, memory card or local network. Check before buying if privacy matters to you.

How often should images rotate?

In a living room, once a day or morning and evening works well. Hallways tolerate faster changes, and bedrooms benefit from a fixed image or switching off at night. Examples in Sequence Your Collection.

Can I display famous paintings legally?

Many museums, including the Met, the Rijksmuseum and the Art Institute of Chicago, publish public-domain images for free use. Check each image's licence; contemporary work is usually under copyright.

How much energy does an art display use?

It depends on size and brightness. Scheduling sleep when rooms are empty usually saves more energy than any other setting. Check the energy label for on-mode and standby figures.

Is a digital frame suitable for a rented home?

Yes. Smaller frames sit on shelves or easels, and larger ones can lean on a console. Picture rails and removable raceways avoid permanent changes.
